Ohlone Wilderness Trail

The 28-mile trail connects Del Valle Regional Park in Livermore to Mission Peak Regional Preserve in Fremont, passing through some of the Bay Area's most remote backcountry. This is serious hiking—steep climbs, exposed ridges, and creek crossings that require overnight permits and careful planning. Most people tackle sections rather than the full route.

Backpackers can camp at designated sites along the way, while day hikers often start from Sunol Regional Wilderness for the Rose Peak section. The trail gets muddy and slippery in winter, scorching in summer—spring and fall offer the best conditions. Dogs allowed on-leash, but bring extra water for them on the longer stretches.
