About Elephant Rock
This striking rock formation in Mount Diablo State Park draws climbers and scramblers to its elephant-head silhouette. Located in the Rock City area, it's part of a natural playground that includes wind caves and other weathered sandstone formations perfect for bouldering and exploration.
The approach involves hiking through the state park's trail system—plan for a moderate trek with some scrambling once you reach the rock formations. Parking at the Rock City staging area fills up early on weekends, so arrive by mid-morning. Dogs are welcome on-leash throughout the park, and the unique geology makes this a favorite spot for families looking to let kids safely explore and climb.
