Augustin Bernal Park / Golden Eagle Trailhead

This Pleasanton park protects rolling hills and oak woodlands along the ridge, with trails winding through terrain that's becoming rare in California. Named for Spanish settler Augustin Bernal, the park was gifted to the city in 1971 and now serves hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians daily from sunrise to sunset. Free parking at the Golden Eagle staging area, though it fills early on weekends.

The climb up to the ridgetop pays off with views stretching to Mission Peak and the Ohlone Wilderness. Multiple trail options accommodate different fitness levels, from gentle nature walks to more challenging ridge routes. Dogs welcome on-leash, and the fire roads are shared with horses, so give them plenty of space when passing.
